Queensland has two similar climate zones, a tropical climate in the north and a subtropical climate in the south. Generally, the western part of the state including the outback regions experience hotter weather with temperatures occasionally, soaring to 40°C (104°F). While the eastern part of the state including Brisbane and surrounding coastal areas experience cooler weather. Throughout the state, there are large variations in annual and seasonal rainfall. Many consider the ‘dry season’ the perfect time to explore the more remote areas of the region that can be off-limits during the wet season.
Northern:
The northern part of the Queensland which includes Tropical North Queensland, Townsville and Whitsundays regions has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons the ‘wet season’ (November – April) and the ‘dry season’ (May – October). The climate in this region is characterised by hot humid summers and warm winters.
Wet Season (November – April)
The ‘wet season’ is characterised by high humidity, monsoonal rains, and storms. Average temperatures range from 23.6 - 31.4°C (74.5 - 88.5°F), and humidity is high. While weather conditions during this period can restrict travel to certain areas, the wet season is considered by many as the perfect time of year to visit the Great Barrier Reef for underwater visibility.
Dry Season (May – October)
The ‘dry season’ is characterised by warm, dry sunny days and cool nights. Average temperatures range from 21.5 - 29°C (70.7 - 84.2°F) and humidity levels are much lower.
Generally, cooler weather arrives between May and July. During this period average temperatures range from 17.5 - 26°C (63.5 - 78.8°F), with crisp nights and many consider this the perfect time to explore the more remote areas of the region that can be off-limits during the wet season.
Southern:
The southern part of Queensland from Mackay to the Gold Coast region has a subtropical climate with two distinct seasons; the ‘wet season’ (November – April) and the ‘dry season’ (May – October). The climate in this region is characterised by warm humid summers and mild winters.
Wet Season (November – April)
The ‘wet season’ is characterised by high humidity and thunderstorms. Average temperatures range from 21 - 29.8°C (69.8 - 85.6°F) with rainfall averaging around 426.6 mm (16.8 inches).
Dry Season (May – October)
The ‘dry season’ is characterised by warm, dry sunny days tempered by cool seas breezes. Average temperatures range from 15 - 25°C (59 - 77°F) and humidity levels are much lower.
Generally, cooler weather arrives between June and August. During this period average temperatures range from 11 - 21°C (51.8 - 69.8°F), with crisp nights and many consider this the perfect time to explore the more remote areas of the region that can be off-limits during the wet season.
